I'm really disappointed by this announcement.

What made GW different from other MMOs was the level 20 skill cap, and the fact that you could play multiple characters and professions easily. I certainly havn't seen the call for higher levels that ANet speak of. Not once. Ever.

Why should I buy this game instead of WoW? At the risk of jumping on the 'OMG races/mounts copy WoW', there seems little to differenciate the two now except the lack of a monthly fee. Now I love the fact that there is no monthly fee, but server performance struggles as a result; there have been problems with the European servers for weeks that have still gone unfixed.

And Gaile, I realise you have years of gaming experience, but that doesn't mean your experiences and wishes are the same as those of the community. There are a few very vocal, high-end players in the community, and there are the majority of whom are quiet and who pop on to play GW while they aren't tying down a full time job, family, and other commitments. Your comparison with civilization and other games is void; I never felt I wanted to bring my empire from Civ I to Civ IV; I never spent over 800 hours on one game of Civilization.

Sure it would be nice to start afresh so everyone is on a level playing field, but with a level 100 cap how long does that level playing field last? A week, until everyone except the hardcore players has to go deal with real life. Why should we reward their massive amount of time ingame? GW has always been about SKILL, not time played. If people were so genuinely unhappy about the level 20 cap in GW, they would have stopped playing long ago and moved to other MMOs.

I won't be buying GW2. I was happy to buy expansions, knowing that I could carry over progress into new campaigns, but the features of GW2 shown thus far just don't do it for me.

Please give me a Priv msg.
Or just reply.

1. Yes --- They'd never release a new chapter without letting you use old characters.
2. Not really --- you're supposed to be able to take titles over to GW2, but not characters.

And for all of you guys that are excited about this news. DO NOT WORRY about those who are bumbed. This happens with a lot of games that move from 1 to 2. It takes them a while to let go and adjust to change, but eventually they'll settle in and agree that the newset version is better. (If it is made better ofcoarse).

If they don't, they'll still be here in GW1, but we'll have a bunch of new people comming in now that GW2 is going to be more like an RPG and less like an intense card game.

Oh and, they aren't going to be competing with WoW so much. LOTR Online is comming out very soon, and I played the stress test I like it better. Basicly what i'm saying is, they are going to have to compete against WoW and LOTRO so it means they should be comming out with some AMAZING stuff to compete.

When GW2 comes out, some players move to GW2, but so dot he bots and all the unsavory businessmen too. No matter what you say it'll always be there, in some form or another. Id think by the looks of it, alot of the people here who are QQ'ing about the loss of their riches will most likely just fall right into the pockets of these chinese businessmen again like they did in the first guild wars.

Ive seen it happen to so many people, they get bored with farming, get impatient when they can't buy what they want, for some its only a matter of time before they click buy now and get it all in one go.

Is it me or did a bunch of people in this topic somehow miss the part where ANet said they were still going to support GW fully?

GW2 is years away and alot of people are acting like the gw1 servers will die tomorrow. I've seen comments like "gw1 is dead and pointless now that gw2 was announced!"

You do realize it's just a game correct?

Successful games having sequals at some point, oh lord it's the apocolypse!
But seriously, gw2 was very predictable, as is the shutting down of gw1 servers, nothing lasts forever, but you're a fool to think that gw2 instantly means no support for gw1 or that it's going to die after this year.

The only real mistake might be calling it Guild Wars 2 to begin with, given the name is already misleading for the first game, but you have to remember way back when GW was meant to be more about pvp, before they realized how popular PvE would be.

If you really are a fan of Guild Wars, you should have more faith in Arenanet and give them a chance, they've done some amazing things already, and if you can't respect their decisions that's fine too, just dont come on and act like any little change will force you and a majority of the players to quit when you know that's just a lie and you're looking for attention.

WoW is a rip off of every other MMO Hell go look up D&D and you will see that WoW didn't invent half of the stuff you people are giving it credit for. I love GW1 and I am very excited about GW2! I love all of the new features they are talking about but some of you people are killing me!! Boo Hoo I can't take over my millions of dollars in gold, my ecto, my char, my weapons. How do we even know if ecto or even gold for that matter will be useable or even IN GW2??? Did anyone ever think about that?

GW2 is going to be a whole new game, new engine, new control system, You can't take your chars from gw1 to gw2 because it wont WORK! to get down to the basic of it, It's all new code! Like Gaile said, Did you get to take your stuff from HL1 to HL2?? NO! Did you get to take your chars from Diablo 1 to Diablo 2?? NO! It just doesn't work that way.

I am sick of seeing all these people say oh well if I wanted to play WoW I will just play WoW! Then GO! we don't need you here! We will be sitting here enjoying are GW2 that is FAR better then WoW! and does have a lot of the same features that are found in EVERY MMO!!!! and or Role Playing in GENERAL! and we will not be paying $15 a bucks a month.

We don't even know the whole idea of GW2 and you people are ready to drop it at the flick of a hat because of one mags info???? It's 2 years away people!! CHILL THE HELL OUT!

I think people who are saying it's a WoW rip off need to shut up, Do some research about role playing and MMO's in general before posting about stuff they have no IDEA on.

Because if those people really loved GW the way they say they do then they would stand up and support the hard work that ANET has done for us and the fact that they listen to the community at all is a god send!

So my point is if you think GW2 is gonna be a WoW rip off then turn your game off now, Go buy or play WoW and waste your $15 a month for a stupid cartoon rip off of every other MMO or Role Playing game in general because WoW didn't invent CRAP! they ripped it from D&D and all the other classic RP games to ever come out.

I will be sitting here waiting for GW2 with JOY! and Respect for the new stuff we get to do, See, Enjoy and be a part of.
Truth'd. Don't make WoW the new thing to be "cloned" like the whole "Doom Clone" thing......

As for the discussion about ArenaNet promising to release a chapter every six months, or merely having that as their target: might be wise for NC Soft Support for GW to change their answer to the question:

"Why are you making expansion packs?"
Cause at this moment the answer is:
Quote:
Players may choose to support future development of the game and expand their own playing experiences by purchasing new chapters -- called "campaigns" -- of the Guild Wars story. These campaigns will be offered about every six to nine months, and will be competitively priced. Unlike most "expansion packs," the new campaigns will be approximately equal in size to the initial campaign of Guild Wars.
edit: removed the answer to Mad Grady since I am so slow with posting that others already answered that....

Looks like a breath of fresh air for Guild Wars.

Something that the PvE community (the ones that keep Anet afloat) has been asking for - more content and depth.

But, anything can happen over the next two years. So, I'll worry about GW2 when the Beta testing starts.

More than enough time for me to get the menagerie of characters through all 3 campaigns now.

I think Anet shot their wad way too early on this, making a huge marketing mistake here imo.

Do not try and get me to buy an "expansion" which seems like it will not be worth the money and your selling point is this retarded hall of monuments and Gwen? Anet, many people will just move on when they realize the current franchise has no future and will play something else worth their time. Sorry Gaile, I know you get paid to be Anet's hype man and I have not believed half of the BS you have told us for a long time because I came to the realization that it is your job to be enthusiastic about this game, but Anet just shot themselves in the foot.

I will be the first to admit I have no life and will look into buying the expansion, but unless my entire guild carries over 2 years from now (not likely with no new GW content to keep people playing...) GW:2 will be DOA. I thought I might calm down with a nights rest, but thinking about it just made me more resolute.

Seriously, how long will that last? Until GW:2 comes out, they want people to buy the new product, they will not be spending money, time and resources on something that they have moved on from, at this point I don't trust anything anet says.

Marketing mistake?? don't think so, but time will tell. At least they are honest about it. ANet could have said that they are still looking at the option to transfer your character from GW to GW2 and then just before release publish that it will not be a feature of GW2 to import characters from GW. Now THAT would make you really disappointed... and make you turn your back on the game. Now you got time to cool down and you know about it so you won't have your hopes up till the last minute that you might be able to transfer it.

And heck, we are talking about two more years till GW2.... that gives you plenty of time to enjoy your character.... hmmm.. thinking of it... can't remember even having a game installed for 2 years continuously on my pc.

The population will survive and probably get bigger before GW2's release. GW:EN wont be out tomorrow, but around Thanksgiving/Holiday(hopefully). Then players will focus on that campaign and ready themselves for the Beta which would be in 2008. Just like when we were all playing Chpater 1 and begged for Factions.

exactly.

plus just last week I saw a new quote from a top arena net exec that they found success in the campaign style of guild wars and planned to continue it. apparently he was lying through his teeth, since gw2 must have already been in development since before nightfall. goddamn people. for shame, Lord British, for shame.

Well, I've started seeing a few more people who aren't quite so Anti-GW:2 now so I'm not quite so depressed any more. Still a lot of people saying "Why should I buy expansion 4 when GW will die"... Is that not the same as deciding not to watch a film on the basis that you can read about it on a forum and just watch it's sequal in a year's time? Guild Wars has no fees and, let's face it, GW:2 wont be out for 2-3 years yet (is my best guess)... GW:EotN will cost...£30? £30 for up to 2-3 years entertainment doesn't sound that bad to me. Some people may get bored in that time, but I'm reasonably sure I wont...and frankly, I want something to do rather than having to find another game I'm as comfortable with or twiddling my thumbs and getting bored until GW:2 is released...just on a point of principle.

Now this is great news.

No real world limitations to servers.
-Yay! No more Europe has the favor of the god BS.
Massive scale capture the flag...
-Finally no more being stuck at the boring PvP modes (hopefully) for new people just because of a number.
Higher lvl cap
-Would prefer higher item stat range instead, but otherwise great, as long as it doesn't affect PvP.
Consistent world + instanced
-Finally they are trying make the game a ROLE PLAYING game instead of a multistage strategy fighter with no interaction...
New Race
-YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! I see enough bloody boring human everyday, I want to be something else, role playing ftw!

Hopefully they won't repeat what they did in GW1 and make everything so damn easy so that its casually boring...

Try doing that in any business field: Say something, then do nothing like what you said. Then call me back telling me how it goes.
